Off-duty deputy gets drunk at Frickers, acts disorderly, and fires gun in his backyard

On Friday, January 3, 2003, Deputy William Helphinstine, who was off-duty at the time, and his wife, Evelyn Helphinstine, were at Frickers, 22 Foley Drive, in Vandalia, Ohio, watching the NCAA Championship Football Game.

Vandalia Police Officers Garlow and Thomas arrested Deputy Helpinstine for disorderly conduct and resisting arrest following an altercation with individuals in the bar. Deputy Helphinstine was allegedly intoxicated at the time. Deputy Helphinstine allegedly was uncooperative with the Vandalia officers, and challenged Officer Thomas to "...Take these cuffs off and you and I go one on one," while Officer Thomas was driving him home.

After arriving home, Deputy Helphinstine allegedly went to his backyard and discharged his firearm several times.
